Calling someone a narcissist has gotten pretty trendy in the last few years, but I believe it's appropriate for the term to be popular. Why? Because there are so many folks out there who fit the description, and it's better that we have a way to name it and talk about it, than to just feel like we're the only ones who see it (or worse, who have experienced the worst a malignant narcissist has to offer).
